Known to be founded by college drop-outs, the company grew into great heights, not only because of its products but also because of its efficient and effective business-level and corporate-level strategies where they focused on broad product differentiation and corporate diversification in order to establish their corporate image of being high-end, high-quality, and unique. Business-Level Strategies Broad differentiation is a business-level strategy that focuses on continuous innovation, research, and development of products that are generally reflecting customer preferences in order to minimize duplicates and avoid market saturation (Chungyalpa and Bora, 2015). Using this strategy, Apple was able to sustain its reputation with high-quality features, dedicated customer services, rapid innovation, and unique facilities for decades and more decades to come. This strategy also gives Apple an advantage over competitors in an industry where innovation and change are rapidly moving. Through broad differentiation, Apple has exuded exclusivity and uniqueness. Steve Job strategically used his design-driven ideas as one of the company’s core competencies, other than customer relations, in order to boost the company’s sales and value creation (Chitturi, 2015). Apple has been one of the leading brands with unique and seamless designs, built with light-weight materials and in line with fashion trends. Apple continually invests in intensive R&D, well-rounded customer relationships, and after-sales services. Corporate-Level Strategies Diversification is a corporate strategy where a company ventures into a new marketable product that is different from the present one or entering into a new industry (Puranam & Vanneste, 2016). Apple, Inc. started as a business that creates computers, however, it began to diversify and expand to other consumer electronics, wearables, software, and online services. Also, recent news implies that Apple has plans to diversify further into the automotive industry, although the management has yet to confirm this issue (Page, 2018). However, this step would probably lead the company to revolutionize, not only the electronics industry but also the automotive industry, giving it a huge boost among its competitors. Through diversification, Apple has not only expanded its potential market and increased its sales, but the company has also sustained dominance and remained unique over its competitors. Apple has continuously reflected on the customer needs and the latest trends, avoiding obsolescence despite new entrants, and establishing a brand that produces up-to-date innovations. Competitive Environment Samsung, one of the leading companies in personal electronics, has been reported to beat Apple in market share and customer satisfaction and has outperformed other brands, based on the study conducted by Chen and Ann (2014). Both companies utilized broad differentiation and diversification, although their approaches and focus have some differences (Jung, 2014). Despite their common market, Samsung has focused on affordability, accessibility and customer satisfaction while Apple has focused on quality, exclusivity, uniqueness and customer loyalty. In diversification, Samsung has even pushed further into other industries such as engineering and construction. Both companies have an efficient business and corporate strategy, continually innovating and expanding in order to stay ahead of other competitors. Despite being at par with each other, given their current stats, performance and market trend, both will remain in the lead within the foreseeable future. Despite the wide competition, the company has remained on top and was able to maintain its corporate image as a high-end company through the efficient application of broad product differentiation and industry diversification.
